Event Details

Sir Arthur Heywood built at least three miniature railways in the late nineteenth century. He built the locomotives, carriages and wagons in a workshop at Duffield which was a small scale version of Derby Locomotive Works.

This is the story of this amazing man and his eccentric railways at Duffield, Doveleys and Eaton Hall which gave a lot of pleasure and attracted much interest in their time. You will hear how his children spent their nights in a narrow gauge sleeping car doing circuits of his grounds among other things. We look at what is left today including a film of the restored railway at Eaton Hall and find out why there are now more Heywood locomotives in operation than there were when he was alive!

This talk by Trevor Griffin takes place at 6pm at No 28 on Belper Market Place and is part of the Belper 250 anniversary celebrations.

All proceeds go to the Belper North Mill Trust.
